Poster on Research on Radio Programming Addressing Male Gender Norms and Family Planning
Publication Date:
04/01/2011 This poster presents preliminary quantitative findings from a study in Tanzania on the effectiveness of radio programming addressing male gender norms in support of a community-based program that distributes contraceptives. The study explored the use of gender scales in predicting contraceptive use, including the Gender Equitable Men (GEM) Scale, and scales adapted from Demographic and Health Surveys: household decision-making, attitudes toward refusal of sex, and attitudes toward wife-beating. The potential programmatic implication is that, beyond human rights considerations, investments in promoting gender equity may contribute to increasing the use of contraception.
